Classic Autumn Apple Crumble
Ingredients:
For the filling:
6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
For the crumble topping:
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon Pinch of salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
Instructions:
Preheat the oven:
To 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter a 9×9 inch baking dish or similar.
Prepare the apple filling:
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and flour. Spread evenly in the baking dish.
Make the crumble topping:
In another bowl, combine flour, oats, both sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter cubes and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into a crumbly texture – like coarse sand with pea-sized clumps.
Assemble and bake:
Sprinkle the crumble evenly over the apples. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
